The Australia to Tanzania distance varies by airport: approximately 8,366 km from Perth to Dar es Salaam, 10,906 km from Melbourne and 11,573 km from Sydney. These are straight-line airport distances. Connecting flight itineraries cover more ground, and total travel time depends on the flights and layovers you book.
Australia to Tanzania distance at a glance
Compare airports rather than relying on a single country-to-country figure. The following figures describe geographic distance, not an available nonstop flight.
| Airport pair | Approximate straight-line distance |
|---|---|
| Perth (PER)–Dar es Salaam (DAR) | 8,366 km |
| Melbourne (MEL)–Dar es Salaam (DAR) | 10,906 km |
| Sydney (SYD)–Dar es Salaam (DAR) | 11,573 km |
| Perth (PER)–Kilimanjaro (JRO) | 8,768 km |
| Melbourne (MEL)–Kilimanjaro (JRO) | 11,333 km |

How long does it take to fly from Australia to Tanzania?
There is no single total journey time. For a connecting trip, add the scheduled duration of every flight and every layover. Do not compare a route calculator’s flying time with an airline’s total itinerary time as though they measure the same thing.
For context, the route database lists the following combined flight times to Dar es Salaam. These figures exclude layovers and are not total travel times or guaranteed booking options.
| Route | Published flying time, excluding layovers |
|---|---|
| PER–DAR | 14 hr 35 min–19 hr 05 min |
| MEL–DAR | 19 hr 20 min–20 hr 55 min |
| SYD–DAR | 18 hr 20 min–21 hr 05 min |
As a separate illustration, Emirates’ Sydney–Dar es Salaam page displayed total itinerary durations of approximately 24 hours when checked. This is an example rather than a minimum or a promise for your travel dates.
Before paying, check the full itinerary, overnight connections, operating airlines, baggage transfer and whether the booking is on one ticket. A shorter geographic distance does not guarantee an earlier arrival.
Are there nonstop flights from Australia to Tanzania?
The six Perth, Melbourne and Sydney routes to Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro checked for this guide require connections. This finding applies to those airport pairs; check current airline schedules for other departure points, Zanzibar and your exact dates.
Connecting routes to compare
Via Doha
Qatar Airways lists a Perth–Dar es Salaam journey connecting in Doha. Compare the full itinerary for your Australian departure city and Tanzanian arrival airport, since a marketed route does not by itself establish the number of stops on every date.
Via Dubai
Emirates markets journeys between Sydney and Dar es Salaam. Check the connecting itinerary and the operating carrier on each sector. For Zanzibar, confirm whether any sector uses a partner airline before comparing tickets.
Via Johannesburg
South African Airways lists Perth–Johannesburg and Johannesburg–Dar es Salaam services. These provide a routing to investigate from Perth, but confirm that the dates and connection times work together before booking.

Which Tanzania airport should you choose?
Choose your arrival airport around the first part of your itinerary. Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) is a starting point to compare for a Dar es Salaam stay or onward southern Tanzania travel. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is an option to compare for Arusha, northern safaris and Mount Kilimanjaro. Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) serves Zanzibar.
For a safari-and-beach trip, compare arriving at one airport and leaving from another. Include domestic flights, ground transfers and overnight stays in the cost and time comparison; an international arrival at JRO does not take you directly into every safari park.

Can you drive from Australia to Tanzania?
No continuous all-road route connects Australia and Tanzania. A journey involving your own vehicle would require sea transport as well as overland travel. For a normal holiday, compare flights instead of treating a road-distance calculator as a usable route.
Visa and entry planning for travellers from Australia
Departure from Australia does not establish your nationality. Australian ordinary-passport holders visiting for tourism need a visa and can use the online or visa-on-arrival route, subject to entry requirements. Other passports, special travel documents and purposes of travel require a separate check.
The Ordinary Visa government fee is US$50, separate from private assistance charges. Official guidance describes validity of up to 90 days; follow the stay granted by immigration. Your passport needs at least six months of validity and one unused visa page. Review the official visa guidance and the return-travel documents required for entry.
Check inbound insurance separately
For visitors covered by the mandatory rules, first entry through Mainland Tanzania uses National Insurance Corporation (NIC), while first entry through Zanzibar uses Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC). The Mainland scheme took effect on 1 October 2026. Read the official implementation notice and confirm the scheme applicable to your arrival.
A Mainland–Zanzibar itinerary does not automatically require two policies. ZIC’s 7 October 2026 clarification addresses valid existing policies and duplicate payments. Retain your valid insurance certificate and QR code. A Mainland exemption does not automatically extend to Zanzibar.
Check requirements for the passport you will use. If you want help with an eligible application, review our optional assistance and current service fees. Tanzania Immigration Services is an independent assistance provider; you may also apply directly through the government channel. Visa decisions and admission remain with the authorities.

Frequently asked questions
Is Tanzania closer to Perth or Sydney?
Dar es Salaam is closer to Perth: approximately 8,366 km versus 11,573 km from Sydney in a straight line between airports. The difference exceeds 3,000 km, but connection times still determine which booked itinerary is faster.
Does flight time include the layover?
It depends on the source. The route database figures in this guide exclude layovers. Use the airline’s total elapsed itinerary time when planning your departure and arrival.
Is a Tanzania eVisa compulsory for every traveller leaving Australia?
No. The rules depend on the passport and travel category, rather than the departure country. Eligible Australian ordinary-passport tourists have both online and visa-on-arrival options; travellers using other documents must check the rules that apply to them.
